lovebird/hatebird

for mezzo soprano and piano, music by Anthony Ritchie, Opus 188

Programme Note

For mezzo soprano and piano

This song was commissioned by Ian Loughran for performance by soprano Sophie Morris (accompanied by the composer) in The 2016 Fringe Festival, Dunedin. It is a setting of two connected poems by Dunedin-based writer Sue Wootton, comparing the beauty of a hummingbird with a sinister imitation, a flying drone. Although two poems are used, this should be considered as one song, and performed without a break.

Dedicated to John Psathas
