Polish Dances

for flute and piano. Anthony Ritchie, Opus 155

These are lively pieces that incorporate Polish folk and classical music into a contemporary musical fabric. They are designed to show off the capabilities of the flute, complemented by an exciting piano part. Polish Dances have been recorded by Adrianna Lis for inclusion on a CD of NZ flute music released by Atoll Records, this track now available on Spotify.

Programme Note

This work was requested by flutist Adrianna Lis, for performances and a CD recording. It is based on three Polish dance pieces:
1. Chlopaki, Chlopaki, a folk song performed by the National Song and Dance Ensemble "Slask".

2. Mazurka in A minor, op.68, No.2 (posthumous) by Chopin. This was chosen to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth.

3. Polka Szabasowka, not originally from Poland but adopted by Polish folk performers. The version I based my piece on was performed on piano accordian by Miroslaw Marks.

These dances were transcribed and used as a basis for free re-composition.

Dedicated to Adrianna Lis.
